Thursday and Friday last week (Aug 2-3), students from FAU participated in an Autonomous Surface Vessel Demonstration sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. This event was a dry run for the first international ASV student competition. The FAU team ranked second in autonomous navigation by successfully steering to 7 of 12 buoys. The best result was UCF who navigated to 11 buoys. Following FAU was Villanova with one buoy. The FAU team was also recognized for having the best vessel layout. The team, who consisted of Jim VanZwieten, Gabriel Alsenas, Sean Marikle, and Erick Busold (with faculty advisor Dr. Rick Driscoll) was awarded $3,500.
